Dr Subhash Chandra show - Choose a career inspired by your talent

Choose a career inspired by your talent

This episode basically concentrates on how an individual could become an entrepreneur.
During the process of becoming an Entrepreneur, Dr Subhash Chandra defined few key aspects:
What is Talent?
Repeated pattern of behaviour that an individual displays for long, sometimes since early childhood is that person’s talent. For example: If one was a Monitor, Captain, Prefect that needs leadership qualities and speaking skills, then they could consider becoming politicians.

What are the available broad types of business opportunities?
  1. Trading: Involves Export, import, purchase from one place and sell it at another place. Usually you don’t add any value to the product.
  2. Professions or Professional Services or business: Engineering, medicine, CA, Sports as a business. Music composer, dancing
  3. Service industry: 2 Types: Consumer facing & B2B. Transport, marketing, supply chain industry, IT, TV industry.
  4. Manufacturing industry: Again 2 subgroups: Consumer facing & other -B2B. Basically manufacturing involves using Raw material or a primitive precursor to result in finished product. Thereby, value addition takes place.
  5. Core Sector: Research & Development, Satellite Industry, Defence production

Dr. Subhash Chandra gave an example of an individual who served till he retired in a profession quite different from what he pursued after retirement. He becomes a renowned poet, which Dr Subhash Chandra believes is delayed identification of inborn talent. If an attempt was made to analyse pattern, the individual could have jumped into poetry much earlier.
When questioned whether all individuals get opportunities., DR Subhash Chandra said, ‘If the creator has bestowed an unique talent in you, he would sometime or somewhere provide an opportunity too. It just needs to be identified’
Question: Whether equity investment can be a business proposition for out-sized returns?
Answer: Equity investment can be a business proposition for people who can analyse & are knowledgeable. However, for people who are ignorant of equity investment, it’s a gamble.

What are the qualities that should be looked for in a potential partner?
Ans: Partnership should be undertaken only if he brings value to the table. That could be in terms of opposite or complementary skill set – Finance, operations, technical talent. More importantly, wavelengths should match. The chemistry should be like that of the Husband-Wife.

Finally, the step wise suggestion for first time entrepreneur:
The first target or aim of a start-up entrepreneur should be to check whether, the business that he would begin would be able to make a living out of it.
Second option to analyse is to see whether any of his near or distant family members are into business and whether he has any inclination towards in taking it further. Whether one could add value to the existing business by way of ones education? Expanding & extending existing businesses is much easier.
Final option would be to start anew by making an attempt to Recognize Talent by writing and analysing. He stressed that by writing, one could organize the thought process, which facilitates thinking & decision making process.
Once you have made a decision, in which you believe, don’t doubt your decisions frequently. Don’t give up dreams. Eat it, drink it and sleep over your dreams. Keep looking; sometime the business would take a turn.
Dr Subash Chandra closed the programme with a quote on Life he likes: Life is a flow of experiences where you are a subject & the rest of the world is the object.  When the subject reacts with the object, it creates experiences. As long as there are experiences, life flows, however when experiences stop life becomes extinct.
I thought, the programme was slowing sedate, lacking the punch. The programme needs energy and personal anecdotal material, instead of talking in third person. Guest invitee Mr Choksi too failed to enliven the show, as people are looking for experience as that of Dr Subhash Chandra.
